If your skin looks wavy and uneven, you have what's called a rolling scar. It's caused by damage under your skin's surface. This type of scarring is often seen on the lower half of your cheeks or the skin around your jaw.
This type of scar looks like an ice pick was used to make it. It has a wide hole at the top that gets smaller as it gets deeper. You're more likely to get ice pick scars on your forehead or upper cheeks because the skin there is naturally thinner.
These may look like a square or circle was pressed into your skin. Often, boxcar scars show up on your jawline or lower cheeks.
Scars that indent your skin, such as hypertrophic scars, create a flat or raised scar tissue over where your acne was. It happens when too much collagen in your skin grows over the area. It is usually common on your chest, back, shoulders, or face.
The aftermath of an acne breakout can leave the skin with unwanted red spots or marks, which may be uncomfortable or even painful. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which leaves the skin discolored or darkened after acne spot has healed.
Keloid scars usually boarders beyond initial acne spot. These raised bumps may be darker than your skin. Like hypertrophic scars, keloid scars can sometimes be itchy or painful.
A medium or deep chemical peel, using ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or TCA, can help improve mild to severe acne scars. These peels are applied in varying concentrations to the skin, along with Jessner's solution.
Laser resurfacing is best for superficial to medium depth scars, which includes boxcar scars, shallow pick and ice pick scars, superficial rolling scars as well as hypertrophic scars. It can also help shrink pores and reduce pigmentation.
Microneedling uses fine needles that prick your skin. During the skin-pricking process, your skin produces more collagen in an effort to heal the small wounds from the needles. It works best for depressed — not raised — acne scars.
Photodynamic red light therapy is a treatment that uses low levels of red light to reportedly improve scars, redness, and acne. It is also touted to treat other medical conditions.
Subcision is a minor surgical procedure used for treating depressed cutaneous scars. Subcision is performed using a special hypodermic needle inserted through a puncture in the skin surface.
